How to  Frame a  Jigsaw Puzzle: A Step-by-Step Guide

There are few things as satisfying as placing the final piece in a complex  jigsaw puzzle. After hours, days, or even weeks of patient work, you're left with a beautiful piece of art that you created. But what comes next? Instead of dismantling your masterpiece and returning it to the box, why not preserve it forever? Framing a puzzle turns your temporary achievement into a permanent piece of home decor.

This step-by-step guide will walk you through the entire process, from preparing your puzzle to hanging it proudly on your wall.

Why Frame Your Puzzle?

  • Preserve Your Hard Work: Framing immortalizes the effort and dedication you put into completing the puzzle.
  • Create Unique Artwork: A framed puzzle is a personal and often stunning piece of art that can't be bought in a store.
  • Conversation Starter: It's a fantastic way to showcase your hobby and share the story behind the puzzle with guests.
  • Cost-Effective Decor: Compared to buying large, pre-framed art, framing a puzzle you already own can be a more budget-friendly option.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need. The right tools will make the process smooth and ensure a professional-looking result.

Puzzles & Brainteasers

  • Completed Jigsaw Puzzle: The star of the show!
  • Puzzle Glue: A clear-drying adhesive specifically designed for puzzles. Common brands include Mod Podge or dedicated puzzle savers.
  • Applicator: A foam brush, old credit card, or a piece of stiff cardboard to spread the glue evenly.
  • Wax Paper or Parchment Paper: To protect your work surface from glue.
  • Rolling Pin or Heavy Books: To ensure the puzzle is perfectly flat.
  • Backing Board: A sturdy surface to mount the puzzle on. Options include foam core board, MDF, or heavy-duty cardboard cut to the exact size of your puzzle.
  • Frame: A picture frame that is the correct size for your puzzle. You can buy a standard size or get one custom-made.
  • Utility Knife or Craft Knife: For trimming the backing board.
  • Ruler or Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements.

Step 2: Prepare the Puzzle

This is a crucial step to ensure a smooth, flat finish.

  1. Work Surface: Carefully slide sheets of wax paper or parchment paper underneath your completed puzzle. This will prevent it from getting glued to your table.

  2. Flatten the Surface: Use a rolling pin to gently roll over the entire surface of the puzzle. This ensures all pieces are interlocked tightly and there are no bumps. If you don't have a rolling pin, you can press down firmly with the flat of your hands or use heavy books.

  3. Clean the Surface: Wipe away any dust or debris from the puzzle's surface with a soft, dry cloth.

Step 3: Glue the Puzzle (The Front)

This method secures the pieces together from the front, creating a single, solid sheet.

  1. Apply the Glue: Pour a generous amount of puzzle glue into the center of the puzzle.

  2. Spread Evenly: Using your applicator (a foam brush or old credit card works great), spread the glue from the center outwards. Your goal is to create a thin, even coat that covers the entire surface and seeps into the cracks between the pieces.

  3. Check for Puddles: Make sure there are no thick puddles of glue. Use your applicator to smooth out any excess.

  4. Wipe the Edges: Use a damp paper towel to wipe away any glue that has dripped onto the wax paper around the edges.

  5. Let It Dry: Allow the puzzle to dry completely. This can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the glue and humidity. The glue will dry clear. For extra strength, you can apply a second coat after the first one is dry.

Step 4: Mount the Puzzle to a Backing Board

Once the glue is dry, the  puzzle will be a single, semi-flexible sheet. Now it's time to give it a rigid backing.

  1. Measure and Cut: Measure your puzzle precisely. Cut your foam core board or other backing material to these exact dimensions using a utility knife and ruler.

  2. Apply Adhesive: Apply a strong adhesive to the backing board. You can use spray adhesive, a thin layer of wood glue, or even the same puzzle glue you used on the front.

  3. Position the  Puzzle: Carefully lift your glued puzzle (you may need a helper for larger  puzzles) and place it onto the adhesive-covered backing board. Start from one edge and slowly lower it to avoid air bubbles.

  4. Press Firmly: Once the puzzle is in position, place it face down on a clean surface and put heavy books on top of the backing board. This will ensure a strong bond as it dries.

Step 5: Frame Your Masterpiece

Your puzzle is now a solid, mounted piece of art, ready to be framed.

  1. Prepare the Frame: Open the back of your picture frame and clean the inside of the glass or plexiglass.

  2. Insert the Puzzle: Place your mounted puzzle into the frame. If you measured correctly, it should be a snug fit.

  3. Secure the Back: Replace the frame's backing and secure it using the attached clips or tabs.

  4. Add Hanging Hardware: Attach a wire or sawtooth hanger to the back of the frame if it doesn't already have one.

Alternative: The No-Glue Method

If you want the option to disassemble your puzzle later, you can frame it without glue. This method requires a frame that fits the puzzle exactly and has a sturdy backing.

  1. Prepare the Frame: Open your frame and place the glass or plexiglass down.

  2. Transfer the Puzzle: This is the trickiest part. You can either assemble the puzzle directly inside the frame's border on top of the glass, or you can carefully slide the completed puzzle from your work surface onto the glass.

  3. Secure It Tightly: Place the frame's backing board directly on top of the puzzle. It's crucial that the backing presses the puzzle firmly against the glass. Any looseness will cause the puzzle to sag or fall apart over time.

  4. Close the Frame: Secure the backing tightly. The pressure between the glass and the backing is what will hold your puzzle together.

Final Step: Hang and Admire

You've done it! Find the perfect spot on your wall, hang your newly framed puzzle, and step back to admire your handiwork. You've not only solved a puzzle but also created a lasting piece of personal art.
